Easter in Kalymnos
At Easter residents from every neighborhood gather up in the mountains and form two groups. Both groups have their firework-dynamites already prepared and one takes over Agio Nikolao (Saint Nikolas) and the other Agio Stefano (Saint Stefano) during the week prior to Easter Sunday. On Easter Sunday afternoon the Kalymnians celebrate with explosions making the whole Island tremble. Even nearby villages of Kos can sometimes hear the explosions. This tradition exists for many years now and recently the starting time has been delayed in order to make this tradition more impressive. Every Easter Sunday the mountains of Kalymnos turn red from the successive dynamite explosions.
