Chora

xwra-1Chora is located 3 km northwest of Pothia and for many centuries was the capital of the island. Today Chora or Chorio is an extension of Pothia. It is built in a valley away from the sea due to pirate attacks. It is a place where they still keep traditions alive. The main attractions of the island are located here. On the hilltop of a steep rock side you can see Pera Castle (Away Castle) or Castle of Chrisocherias or Castle of Chora which was built in the years of Byzantium by the Knights of the Order of St. John.

Argos

argos-1Argos is located southwest of Chora in a short distance. It is an extensive plateau with an altitude of 170m close to where the airport is. The name Argos was given by the Argious of Peloponnese that stayed there after the Trojan War. Argos is a small and sparsely populated village where the residents work on farming and agriculture. Traditional products of Argos are the hand kneaded bread, Barley coils and cheese products. Every summer the annual celebration of Tsampouna (hornpipe) is organised.

Skalia

skalia-1Scala is a coastal village overlooking the islands of Telendos and Calavro. There is a cave named Skalia in the area, whose access is quite difficult, which is filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Located in the western part of the settlement is the church of Agios Mamas (Saint Mamas), which is built in the position of an ancient building as many other little churches. The inhabitants’ main occupation are cattle-breeding, agriculture and fishery. The rocky slopes along the road offer ideal climbing spots in an Aegean Sea background.
